Rise of the Runelords

A Bloody Morning

We awake in the Rusty Dragon ready to start the day only for one of the workers to tell us that Ameiko is missing! We investigate the room which appears orderly, however a note is on the bed. The note opens with "Hello, Sis!"; and asks Ameiko to come to the Glassworks at midnight to help look for her dad and find information on Sandpoint's recent troubles. The note is very vague but hints that asking for help could result in more trouble. The sender of the note, as signed at the bottom of the page is Tsuto. We learn that this is the name of Ameiko'S brother. He is bad news. Our worries rise and we decide the best course of action is to head to the glassworks.

We arrive at the Glassworks and look around. Its a large building with tall windows, too tall for us to see in. As our crew fumbles around trying to find a way into the building, a few passerbys inquire about our suspicious activity.  Polk walks to the door and picks the lock. The crew enters and finds that the place is a mess. Obviously some bad stuff went down. We look around the place and check out some rooms. Opening a door to a large dining area we are greeted by a terrible sight.  Blood covers the floor and tables, everything is smashed yet strangely there are no bodies. We follow trails of blood down a hallway and come to what would normally be a room for cooking glass. Instead it is covered with blood, body parts, and goblins. After a long fight involving fire, glass, pain, and a very impressive table throw only one goblin remains. We chase him down and discover that he is the same goblin that we interrogated just a couple of days ago. We do away with him and investigate the room further.

In the center of the room is a man incased in solid glass with a slight gold tint to it. Upon further inspection we realize this is Ameikos dad. He couldn't have been the one in charge of these goblins. We double back to check out the file room and a safe for clues. Our search is unsuccessful, however Variel finds a hidden compartment with gold and gems in a sack. He takes it, but not without hearing a few words from Zim who heavily disagrees with this action.

As we continue exploring we realize there are tunnels to check out. The tunnels are like a maze but we are making it through. We see a room with a door and decide to check it out. Generally doors help hide things. We sneak in and find an elf asleep on a bed, he doesn't notice us. We think quickly and begin wrapping rope around him and the bed.  As he awakes, Medved pulls the rope tight and secures him to the bed. After a little roughing up we discover that he is Tsuto and he will not spill anymore beans. Searching his stuff we find a journal and in it the plans for the previous goblin invasion. As well as plans for a bigger attack. HE is in charge! We learn that his girlfriend is trying to become a demon! We learn more about her plans and who she is and decide to take Tsuto with us. However we can't leave without Ameiko! We find her in a nearby rooms. She is hurt but not anything that Zim can't take care of. We gather our party and head back to town.

Sandpoint Adventures and a Banquet!

The vicious boar down. A party wounded, yet ready for a feast! As our gang heads back to town they hear a terrible scream. One of Aldern's manservants no doubt. They come upon the group of servants and find one has a giant tick on him! The fight is going fine until more ticks begin to rain from above! Our heroes dispatch the creatures but not without cost. Calenor, Zim, and a servant have been drained and will require healing. The group heads back to the Rusty Dragon to prepare the feast.

Once back to town our gang splits up once again for various errands. Medved learns more about the Bonegrinder goblins from a very goblin obsessed stable owner. Variel flirts with Ameiko, as this has become is new hobby. Polk goes to the market to find poison, but is unsuccessful due to the cost. Cal and Zim take another trip to the local church. They tell of their troubles with boars and ticks and while Father Zantus doesn't seem impressed, he is sympathetic. They, and their blood, are restored!

Back at the Rusty Dragon, Variel is being observed by a group of young girls. None of our gang has the slightest idea of who these girls could be, but they seem to like him. They must not have talked to him yet. One of the girls comes over. She tells of troubles with rats in her basement and requests that Variel, a powerful and evil witch, come and help her. However when Variel arrives at the basement he finds no rats. Only a young girl with questionable morals who seduces him! As they are getting to know each other, quite rapidly and with their bodies, a large bang on the basement door is heard. The girls father comes into the room, tall and burly with a burning rage in his eyes. "Get away from my daughter!!" he yells. With just two swings of his mighty fist landing, Variel is broken and bleeding. He seems to be in trouble. Variels quick thinking prevails however as he puts the man to sleep with a spell and runs out of the house. Polk, having come to make sure everything was ok; sees Variel running out of the house holding on to all his clothes, instead of wearing them.

More errands are being run in preparation for the feast, which is just about to begin. Zim is assisting Ameiko with the food, and doing a mighty fine job! While shopping around Medved finds a peculiar amulet and hopes someone in his group can help him decipher the strange markings and figures. A young man approaches Polk and hands him a note. He requests a  meeting after dark, and seems to be in trouble. Our heroes put their heads together and come to the conclusion that the amulet has magic of the Faye. When certain Words are spoken in Faye, two soldiers emerge from the amulet. Faceless and unresponsive the soldiers are very creepy. The same incantation that summons, also dismisses the soldiers and we see them disappear back into the amulet.

The feast is well under way and all of the most important people in town are there. Our heroes included! They are the heroes who saved the town in their time of need and hold a special place in the peoples hearts. Everyone is having a great time, recounting stories of the day. Polk is still suspicious of the town. Variel tries to convince his friends that the girl was totally into him and completely legal. The feast is going swimmingly. Until a man enters the bar. Yelling and trying to pick a fight with everyone! Our group prepares to deal with this intruder but is stopped by Ameiko. "Father! What are you doing here?" she says. He is a member of Sandpoint's nobility however he is not as big a fan of our gang as the rest of the town. He begins hurling insults at the heroes and upon insulting Arthmael is picked up by Medved. He finishes his talk with Ameiko, asking her to come home. She denies his request and Medved throws him outside.

Once dinner is done the group heads out to meet up with and investigate the young man. He tells of his troubles. He and a friend decided it would be a good idea to get into highway robbery. On their first trip out they attempted to rob the wrong people, were beaten severely and separated. This all occurred near the Ashen Moor. The group decides to check out these claims eventually and head back to the Inn for the night.

Back at the Rusty Dragon, our gang finds a meeting happening with the mayor, sheriff Hemlock, and a strange woman in armor. The group is invited to join the meeting as it concerns them greatly. The woman introduces herself as Shalelu, and recounts her history of bravery and heroism. She is a mercenary, not a noble profession ordinarily, but she has taken up the duty of keeping goblins out of where they don't belong. She tells us of the five major goblin tribes:

Bird Cruncher

Lick Toads

Seven Tooths

Thistle Top

She tells us that recently the tribes, who normally stay out of each others way, appear to be uniting! There could be someone smarter and more powerful leading the goblins. They tell her that one goblin did say something about a "longshank" master. The meeting comes to a close with the conclusion that more investigating should be done. Our group wil look into the goblins as they are a very pressing matter and could lead to more important discoveries. They are told that the Mosswood goblins are causing trouble so thats the best place to start!

In the morning our gang will venture forth to find the cause of this goblin craziness!

Boars & Crypts
Post Goblin Shenanigans

Following the catastrophe at the Swallowtail Festival, our unlikely heroes were swept into different directions. Medved, Arthmael, Zim, and Cal chose to tend to the villagers and discuss the goblin's motives of attacking. Polk and Variel had much more nefarious plans in mind.

In the commotion, Sheriff Hemlock and his men managed to capture one of the goblin underlings. Covered in food and filled with rage, he refused to talk to the Sheriff. Enter one bear and one bear-like man. Arthmael bared his teeth at the creature, while Medved threateningly recited a recipe for shepherd's pie in druidic. Zim and Cal stood at the side and asked questions, with Cal translating through his abilities to comprehend unknown languages. Through their interrogation, the group learned that the goblins themselves may have been a distraction for darker deeds..

The longshank leader has robbed a mausoleum.

The Hagfish. Late Evening. Polk tracked his target to the bar and noted the pungent smelling fish in the tank. Ol' Nora is hideous. Through astute observation, a challenge exists at this establishment. Pay to drink out of Ol' Nora's tank and take all of the silver in the pouch. That is, if you can keep it down. It's not complicated to beguile a drunk mayor into taking the challenge for herself. She lacks the fortitude and Polk isn't quite sure what Variel sees in her. He gathers the information Variel requires, and leaves post-haste to the Rusty Dragon.

In the Rusty Dragon, Variel is putting on a bit of a show. Juggling fireballs and amazing the townsfolk. With each fireball, Ameiko blushes more. Variel, though a lady's man by trade, is not much of a smooth talker. He lets his abilities do the talking. His choice between Ameiko and Mayor Devirin may prove to be as dangerous as his fire juggling..

The heroes regroup in the Rusty Dragon again and head out to assist Sheriff Hemlock with the disturbance in the boneyard. It seems, upon their arrival, that one of the mausoleums has been robbed. The group enters, while Arthmael and the Sheriff stand watch at the door. One of the tombs lays empty, when suddenly the skeletons on the floor are reanimated and begin their attack. Our group makes short work of them and tell the news to the Sheriff and Father Zantus.

The sheriff and Zantus further discuss the goblin's motives with the group. Will we ever find out what they wanted in the crypt? (Tune in next time on Dragonball Z) Zantus showers our heroes in supplies and a few gifts to help them along their way.

The group returns to the Rusty Dragon for some food and drink before turning in for the night.

The following morning, Aldern Foxglove is waiting for them in the tavern to remind them of the hunt they were invited to. The group accompanies Aldern and his friends on the hunt and discover one thing more terrifying than even goblins and skeletons..

One angry boar.

Worst Concert Ever.
Fire and Blood

It was the day of the Swallowtail Festival, commemorating the building of the new cathedral in town, due to the previous one being destroyed by a mysterious fire. Some had lost their lives that day, including the high priest of the chapel, Father Ezakien Tobyn. His most accomplished student, Absalar Zantus, now taking his place. The town of Sandpoint was abuzz with mirth and excitement. The entire town, as well as our brave heroes, had gathered in hopeful anticipation of exciting games of skill, delicious food, and  elaborate speeches from some of the town's most respected leaders.

Father Zantus was one of many speakers to kick off the occasion. Standing behind a podium in the town square, he thanked everyone for attending and declared the Swallowtail festival to be officially underway. The other speakers included the beloved Mayor Deverin who, you could tell, was having just as good a time as the rest of the attendees. She welcomed visitors and cracked some jokes about some of the other well-known people in town. Sheriff Belor Hemlock soberly reminded everyone to be safe, especially around the bonfire, and called for a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in the fire. Cydrak Drokkus got the crowd riled up with his humor and stage presence.

Cal and Variel, the elven brothers, had been in Sandpoint for about a month, preparing the townsfolk to deal with a possible giant incursion. Medved, the giant naturist with a heart of gold, and his bear companion, had ventured into town to check out the festival and perhaps panhandle a few silver. Polk, a mysterious stranger, recently showed up in town and now lurked in the shadows, carefully observing the festivities, while another stranger, the gnome cleric, Zim, had traveled in to check out the area, paying his proper respects, and meeting as many people as he could.

The festival began as it always does with games that showcased the towns various strengths: a tug-of-war match, a weightlifting competition, sack races, and the like. Cal decided to participate in the balance beam competition against a couple of teenagers and managed to prevail. One of the boys actually provided a bit of competition before his friends interrupted things, while Clay, a portly young lad, sadly couldn't even make it onto the beam. Medved showcased his incredible strength at the weightlifting competition by outclassing everyone there, earning a blue ribbon for both himself and his companion.

After the games, came a great feast—a cooking competition—showcasing a few of the town's most renowned food aficionados. Ameiko won the competition, as she was expected to do, with a curry-spiced salmon dish which was highlighted nicely by her home-brewed mead. The food was so impressive, even Zimton (who fancies himself a good cook) was inclined to seek her out and inquire about her recipe. He discovered that she's the owner of the Rusty Dragon, a tavern in the southern district of town. She invited him to stop by later to talk further of cooking and recipes. Variel took it upon himself to sample all the various meads and brewed drinks that participants were providing. (he made sure to visit each table at least once).

Following the meal, Father Zantus told a parable about how Desna fell to earth and was nursed back to health by a blind child, who she then transformed into an immortal butterfly. Most residents of Sandpoint knew this story already, but it was a theology lesson for Zim. Zantus's acolytes removed the cover from the cart they had wheeled into the middle of the town square, and thousands of butterflies were released and filled the air, which was far less frightening than some of our heroes thought it would be at first hearing.

As dusk was approaching, Father Zantus took to the central podium again, this time to recite the Prayer of First Dreaming. After using a thunderstone to get everyone's attention, he began.. but that's when a woman screamed. Near our heroes, a dog that was sleeping under a wagon gave out a yelp, then collapsed in a gurgle as his throat had been cut ear to ear! There were screams, that accompanied the bestial cries of pain, as the town fell under attack by a horde of goblins. Emboldened by the chanting of a horrific choir these little demons scurried through the town assaulting innocents and feasting on the festival's remains.

The party faced off against a small group of goblins in incredible displays of athleticism, mysticism, faith and bravery; killing many goblins and saving many lives. The mysterious and quiet Polk showed his competence by sliding over a table and stabbing a goblin right in the chest. Calenor easily did a flip onto a table and brought down with him the full force of his elven curved blade, decapitating one of the fowl creatures. The powerful Variel was crippling his foes left and right, but still found time to stop and utilize his dark powers to start fires! Unfortunately, his brother, Calenor was in target area of this dark magic. Perhaps Variel had too much winterdrop mead for lunch. Medved and his brother Arthmael slashed and chomped at goblins with ease. The resourceful Zimton called upon the power of his god, Abadar, granting miraculous speed to himself and healing the wounds of his new allies.

After a short battle, it appeared that the devastation of the goblins reached beyond what was first realized. The town was in utter chaos. Nearby, a fuel wagon exploded, and a few little pyromaniac goblins were seen trying to wreak more havoc, this time accompanied by a warchanter… a goblin who sang and chanted, bringing with its awful voice both courage and fear. Our party went to work again, but this time, Cal was knocked unconscious and set ablaze by a coordinated goblin attack. As the party fought, the local priest came to their rescue, providing much needed healing and a bucket of water for Cal. Unfortunately, Father Zantus was also set ablaze but continued to fight through the flames. Eventually, the battle was over.

It seemed as if the chaos was seceding, but again, a shrill scream met the party's ears. and they rushed to assist. A man, whom the party later learned was Aldern Foxglove, had hidden himself behind a barrel, while his faithful hound was fighting off a mounted goblin. When the hound fell, other goblins nearby rushed close to celebrate. Through some careful tactical choices, and selfless dedication to helping others, the party was able to save Aldern.

By then, the battles around town had been decided. People were walking down the streets to return to their homes for the evening. Many stopped and thanked our heroes as they passed by, some of them remembering their faces from the festivities earlier that afternoon. Ameiko offered them free rooms for a week at her establishment, the Rusty Dragon. Aldern asked them to stop by there later (that's where he's staying) because he would like to talk with them more and give them a proper reward for saving his life.

All in all, it was a pretty eventful first day for these heroes. Sandpoint doesn't know how lucky it is.

Welcome to your campaign!
A blog for your campaign

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.
